The MVC-CIML Crossover Shootout event is January 6 at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids. It features seven games, most of them pitting a school from the Central Iowa Metro League against one from either the Mississippi Valley Conference or Mississippi Athletic Conference

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the first installment of its dual rankings for all classes. The poll is used to determined regional dual qualifiers and are considered in pairings. Eight regional dual champions advance to the State Duals tournament Feb. 3 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Cedar Rapids Xavier junior Jack Foster was so unsatisfied with how his first season of varsity went that he devoted more time to clubs and competing in the offseason. He’s reaping the rewards now. Foster won the 126-pound title Saturday at the North Linn Lynx Invitational.

Linn-Mar’s boys’ basketball team was 4-0 to start this season, those wins coming by four points, three points (twice) and two points. That made a 76-63 win Friday night over previously unbeaten Iowa City West a veritable blow out.

In addition to overall co-players of the year Derek Weisskopf of Williamsburg and Preston Ries of Monticello, The Gazette’s 2023 all-area football team is led by offensive player of the year Grant Glausser of Western Dubuque and defensive player of the year Rayce Heitman of Williamsburg. Curt Ritchie of Williamsburg is the area coach of the year.
