Boys’ state swimming results: Joe Polyak closes City High career with 2 more state titles

Iowa City High’s Polyak capped off a brilliant prep career by defending his title in the 200-yard individual medley, winning in 1:46.35, five seconds ahead of runner-up Dylan Nelson of West Des Moines Valley. He backed that up by taking the 100 breaststroke title in 53.42 seconds. In most years, that performance would have likely been worthy of the swimmer of the meet honor, but that went to his I-Fly club teammate Owen Chiles of Pleasant Valley, who set state records in winning the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Linn-Mr 6-foot-8 junior forward Davis Kern picked up his 1,000th-career point in a game last week. If he picks up his pace a little bit, he could approach the school career record for points, which Marcus Paige and Jason Bohannon have. Kern scored 32 points Monday in his team’s 77-38 win over Cedar Rapids Washington.

Alburnett has climbed to the top of the Class 1A boys’ wrestling dual rankings. The Pirates were fourth at the 2023 state duals and will host regional duals again this season. The Wamac Conference has seven teams in the field with No. 2 Mount Vernon, West Delaware and Indpendence hosting 2A regional duals. Linn-Mar is the lone Gazette-area host in 3A.

Coe dominates at A-R-C Duals to continue strong second half of season

Coe followed up a fifth-place finish at the NWCA National Duals with a 4-0 mark at the American Rivers Conference Duals on Saturday at Luther in Decorah. The Kohawks improved to 10-1 this season. The A-R-C held its first women’s conference tournament, Iowa’s offense against Purdue and prep results in the Wrestling Weekend That Was.

Iowa plays Saturday afternoon against Bucknell at Casey’s Center in Des Moines, formerly known as Wells Fargo Arena. Hawkeye head coach Ben McCollum said this week he’d like to continue playing games in the state’s capital city, against a power-five conference opponent.
