Linn-Mar dominated the team race at Saturday’s boys’ swimming district meet, but Cedar Rapids Washington’s Andrew Seifert broke a record held by late coach Chris Cruise.
Sigourney’s Reanah Utterback has placed at the IHSAA state tournament. She is competing in the IGHSAU state tournament this season and opened with two pins quicker than a minute Thursday morning.
Linn-Mar swimmer Parker Macho’s trajectory has continued in his sophomore season. He enters Saturday’s district meet at Linn-Mar Aquatic Center with the state’s best time in the 200 individual medley (1:52.55) and is third in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.

No. 1-ranked teams in Iowa high school basketball picked up some big wins last week: Class 1A’s top-ranked North Linn girls beat 3A No. 1 Mount Vernon, while the 4A top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy boys handled West Des Moines Valley. And there’s another big boys’ game on Friday, when 1A No. 1 Bellevue Marquette hosts No. 3 North Linn. Waverly-Shell Rock won the last three bouts — all by fall — and rallied past No. 8 Linn-Mar, 42-36, in a Class 3A boys’ wrestling regional dual Tuesday night at Linn-Mar High School.
Linn-Mar beat Cedar Rapids Washington 77-38 in a boys’ basketball game Monday night.
Linn-Mr 6-foot-8 junior forward Davis Kern picked up his 1,000th-career point in a game last week. If he picks up his pace a little bit, he could approach the school career record for points, which Marcus Paige and Jason Bohannon have. Kern scored 32 points Monday in his team’s 77-38 win over Cedar Rapids Washington.
Alburnett has climbed to the top of the Class 1A boys’ wrestling dual rankings. The Pirates were fourth at the 2023 state duals and will host regional duals again this season. The Wamac Conference has seven teams in the field with No. 2 Mount Vernon, West Delaware and Indpendence hosting 2A regional duals. Linn-Mar is the lone Gazette-area host in 3A.
Coe followed up a fifth-place finish at the NWCA National Duals with a 4-0 mark at the American Rivers Conference Duals on Saturday at Luther in Decorah. The Kohawks improved to 10-1 this season. The A-R-C held its first women’s conference tournament, Iowa’s offense against Purdue and prep results in the Wrestling Weekend That Was.

Senior guard Joe Bean scored one point in Class 4A top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s win last weekend over fifth-ranked Waukee. Thursday night, Bean had a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds as Kennedy knocked off 10th-ranked Linn-Mar, 79-53.
