Iowa City High’s Polyak capped off a brilliant prep career by defending his title in the 200-yard individual medley, winning in 1:46.35, five seconds ahead of runner-up Dylan Nelson of West Des Moines Valley. He backed that up by taking the 100 breaststroke title in 53.42 seconds. In most years, that performance would have likely been worthy of the swimmer of the meet honor, but that went to his I-Fly club teammate Owen Chiles of Pleasant Valley, who set state records in winning the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Linn-Mar, fresh off a big win at last week's district meet, enters the Iowa high school boys’ state swim meet at No. 4 in the power rankings. Defending champion Waukee is ranked first, just ahead of West Des Moines Valley and Bettendorf.

Sigourney’s Reanah Utterback has placed at the IHSAA state tournament. She is competing in the IGHSAU state tournament this season and opened with two pins quicker than a minute Thursday morning.
Linn-Mar swimmer Parker Macho’s trajectory has continued in his sophomore season. He enters Saturday’s district meet at Linn-Mar Aquatic Center with the state’s best time in the 200 individual medley (1:52.55) and is third in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly.

Quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis started five games as a red-shirt freshman for the University of Minnesota in 2022 and then the entire 2023 season. But the Gophers brought in a touted quarterback from the transfer portal that offseason, and Kaliakmanis ended up moving on to Rutgers, where he has become one of the best QBs in the Big Ten Conference.
