IOWA CITY - Organizers will start Sunday setting up a flag display on the University of Iowa Pentacrest in time for Veterans Day on Friday.
About 5,500 small American flags have been donated to honor and identify veterans with ties to the UI or the community.
In this third annual event, the UI Veterans Association Group is getting help from students involved in the Upward Bound program to arrange the flags to form the letter I - for Iowa - on the west lawn of the Pentacrest.
Each of the flags will have a tag to show the veteran's name, rank, years of service and tours of duty.
On Friday morning, the UI Veterans Association and Reserve Officers' Training Corps will honor the state's veterans with a reveille ceremony and the raising of the U.S. flag over the Old Capitol building.
West Liberty High School sophomore Brice Page puts a flag dedicated to a veteran with Iowa ties into the lawn on the westside of the Pentacrest at the University of Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, in Iowa City. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
