In an effort to reduce litter and enhance beautification, the Uptown District has installed 11 new trash receptacles at various locations in the 1200, 1300, 1400 and 1500 blocks of First Avenue East. The project came to fruition thanks to the collaboration of the Uptown District, the City of Cedar Rapids and several area businesses.
Participating businesses include Tallgrass Business Resources, Hawkeye Convenience Store, Hy-Vee, C & F Properties/Encompass, the Cigarette Outlet, Wendy's and Subway. Additional funding for the project was secured from the City of Cedar Rapids, with King's Materials providing the concrete bases for the receptacles. Tallgrass Business Resources also contributed the labor to install the receptacles.
The new trash receptacles are attractive, structurally solid and similar to the ones that are located in the downtown district. Each has colorful “Uptown District” stickers to both identify and promote the district. The City of Cedar Rapids has agreed to remove the trash collected in the bins on a regular basis.
According to Uptown District President Scott Crosby, the trash receptacles have been installed as a way to encourage putting litter in its place to beautify the district.
“One of the goals of the Uptown District is to reduce litter and beautify the area. We're hopeful that the new receptacles will keep our area of First Avenue cleaner, enhancing the overall appearance of the district,” said Crosby. “We are grateful for the support of our membership, the city of Cedar Rapids, and other businesses for making this project a reality.”
