The African American Museum of Iowa (AAMI) is excited to announce two upcoming programs on Dec. 17, 2011. Both will be held in conjunction with the final day of the AAMI's 2011 temporary exhibit “Unconditional Loyalty: The Military Service of African Americans.”
“Goodbye Unconditional Loyalty” will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be special guided tours available of the temporary exhibit at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There will also be free activities for children throughout the day, the opportunity to write a letter to a soldier and more. AAMI Director of Education Michelle Poe said “We'll learn about everything from what it was like to be a World War I solider in the trenches to a famed Tuskegee Airman flying high above the sky. This is a day you don't want to miss!” The AAMI's permanent exhibit, “Endless Possibilities”, will also be open.
“Time for Kwanzaa” will run from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and will focus on celebrating a holiday that focuses on unity, community, creativity and faith – Kwanzaa! The open house event for children and families will have food, music and hands-on activities for all ages. Participants will be able to prepare for Kwanzaa with activities, stories, and information about what the holiday is and what it stands for.
