CEDAR RAPIDS - The goal was 1 million minutes.
And on Saturday, officials from the Cedar Rapids Public Library announced the goal had been met.
During an end of summer event to celebrate the library's annual Summer Dare learning and reading program, officials said this year's participants logged a total of 1,201,349 minutes of reading.
'It's exciting and it's a testament to the city and their love of literacy, their love of their library and their engagement with us and each other,” said Kevin Delecki, the library's programming manager.
The announcement was made at Greene Square during an event that also included face painting, crafts and a variety of other activities for families to enjoy.
This year, 4,400 people signed up for the Summer Dare program and about 17,000 participated in its programming.
The goal of the program is to encourage lifelong learning, interaction and experiences in the Library and beyond.
