OXFORD – Nine veterans who served from World War II to Vietnam will be recognized during a ceremony Sunday, Sept. 9, along with four American Legion auxiliary members.
The American Legion Post 537 is honoring continuous service to the Legion and community during the 3 p.m. event at 128 East Main St. in Oxford.
Chartered in 1920, the post is 92-years-old; all of the members have served at least 50 years.
Kathy Tandy, one of the organizers, noted that the legion has three branches: the American Legion, which requires past or current military service; the American Legion Auxiliary, comprised of women who have a family member belonging to the Legion; and the Sons of the American Legion, men who have a family member in the Legion.
Many families have members in all three units, Tandy said.
Family members are invited to attend Sunday's event.
Legion honorees are Dean Crow, the “senior” member with 67 years of service, along with L. G. Klein; Robert Vermace; Joseph Matthess; James Rohret; Ray Stratton; Alfred Scheetz; Richard Yenter and Mitchell Campbell.
Auxiliary honorees are Claudia Haman, who has served 53 years, and Carol Neitderhisar; Irene Matthess and Mary Madlock.
Guest speakers include Maj. Gen. Robert Sentman; Congressman Dave Loebsack; Oxford Mayor Don Saxton and Legion officers.
