CEDAR RAPIDS - Mercy Medical Center and Alliant Energy are teaming up to intensify breast cancer awareness.
In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, and other areas around Mercy's Cedar Rapids campus, will feature pink lights today through the end of the month.
A program dubbed 'The Power of Pink” is 7:30 p.m. today before the lighting at Mercy's Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, 701 10th St. SE, The center specializes in treatment of breast, colon, lung, prostate and skin cancer.
A fireworks show is scheduled to follow the lighting.
The public is invited and encouraged to wear pink.
Festivities include refreshments, a photo booth and face painting.
For each person who attends, a $2 donation goes to the Especially for You fund, according to Mercy Medical Center officials. The fund provides breast care services, including mammograms, for those who can't afford them.
Representatives from Alliant Energy plan to distribute energy-saving, pink light bulbs free while supplies last. Recipients of the bulbs are encouraged to use them as porch lights during October as a reminder to get screened for breast cancer.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation says 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. It is the secondleading cause of cancer death among women, according to the foundation.
