Iowa woman aims to sing at every pro baseball stadium

Manchester native Megan Besler is on her way to completing the goal of a lifetime: singing the national anthem at all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums.

Besler performed at Miller Park in Milwaukee in 2011, Busch Stadium in St. Louis in 2013 and Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City in 2014. She also has sung multiple times for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Harlem Globetrotters.

Besler credits her goal to a long-held passion for singing and baseball.

'I've always wanted to be a singer since I can remember. I sang through high school, and once I graduated I set out to sing at bigger venues,” Besler said.

When she moved to Milwaukee to become a licensed esthetician, Besler sent a demo CD to every team in the area. To her surprise, she received a call back from the Brewers.

Just one week later, she sang in front of a stadium audience of 35,000 people. Since then, she has sent demo CDs to every MLB stadium each year.

It was after being scheduled to sing for the Cardinals that Besler said she decided to go for every ballpark.

Besler does not have a manager or any vocal training outside of her high school choir, making this goal especially ambitious. But she is confident that she can succeed as a soloist.

'I have a lot of people tell me this is such a big dream, it's unattainable and will never happen. Those are the folks I really want to prove this to,” Besler said. 'I'm doing this to prove to myself, and the world, that you can truly get somewhere in the entertainment business without having a record label.”

Besler said that her grandfather is another motivator for her. She hopes to have him on the field during one of her performances, so he can hear her sing, and because they share a passion for baseball.

Besler is scheduled to tackle her fourth stadium performance this upcoming summer at Minute Maid Park in Houston. She has started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for travel expenses.
