Horizons, A Family Service Alliance is once again teaming up with the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) to generate interest in the Horizons Meals On Wheels program as part of March For Meals, a national campaign designed to raise awareness of senior hunger and encourage action on the part of local communities. Other senior nutrition programs across the country are joining Horizons in promoting March For Meals through public events, partnerships with local businesses, and volunteer recruitment initiatives.
Horizons Meals On Wheels depends on more than 200 volunteers throughout the course of a year to make and deliver meals to homebound older adults and persons with disabilities. The focus of Horizons' March For Meals campaign is to seek out volunteers in the Cedar Rapids area, according to Horizons Meals On Wheels Director Dianna Young. “It takes over 40 routes to deliver approximately 800 meals to our clients daily,” she said. “That's a task that would be impossible to complete without the help of our dedicated volunteers.”
Research sponsored by MOWAA has revealed that 6 million older adults face the threat of hunger in the United States, making it more important than ever to provide the food and human contact Meals On Wheels provides to its clients. “Our Meals On Wheels programs are on the front lines every day in the battle against senior hunger,” said MOWAA President and CEO Enid Borden. “March For Meals is a time when communities can come together to stand with their local Meals On Wheels and support our mission to end senior hunger in America by the year 2020.”
Anyone who wants a truly fulfilling lunch hour is encouraged to volunteer with Horizons Meals On Wheels. For more information, call 319-398-3574 or visit
