The Heritage Agency on Aging's annual Senior Farmers Market Nutrition program starts in June, coinciding with many eastern Iowa farmers markets. It gives low-income seniors free vouchers to use at local farmers markets to buy fresh produce and honey.
The popular program is open to seniors 60 and older with an income less than $21,256 for individuals or $28,693 for couples. Coupon books will be available June 4 and can be redeemed throughout the year.
Each qualifying participant can pick up a book of 10 coupons, available at many distribution sites around eastern Iowa. Each coupon is worth $3 and is redeemable at participating area farmers markets and vendors. A list of participating markets and vendors are provided with each book of coupons.
Coupons are only good towards produce and honey, and cannot be used to purchase crafts, jams, baked goods and other products.
For the distribution site nearest you or for questions about the Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program, please contact The Heritage Agency at 319-398-5559. The program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and administered by the Heritage Agency on Aging.
