At Home: Investing in quality cabinets pays off

A kitchen remodel is one of the best returns on investment a homeowner can make, according to a 2015 report from the National Association of Realtors.
And investing in quality cabinets is a key part of any remodel, says Donna Hamm of Hamm's Home Interiors in Iowa City.
She laid out some of the benefits of going the 'extra mile” for high quality cabinets.
Precision machinery assures true uniformity with the finest woods, she says.
Hand sanding, not machine, prepares the wood before a sealer coat is applied. Parts are lightly sanded again and cleaned. The combination of sealer and conversion top coat achieves the ultimate appearance, durability and long-lasting beauty.
An oven-cured finish, as opposed to air dryer or 'heat lamp” dryer is the best method for finishing, Hamm says. Hand-wiping stains on the wood rather than spraying them on is another advantage of higher end cabinets.
All of these factors add up to greater durability and longer life for your cabinet investment.
'You will enjoy an easy to clean finish that looks great for years to come,” Hamm says.
She also recommends paying attention to the way cabinet doors close. Soft touch, or 'slam-proof” doors and drawers are popular right now and available in almost every cabinetry line, no matter the price range.
'But some soft-touch hardware is better than others. It's something to be mindful of when buying cabinets,” she says.
Check that doors close evenly, so the drawer or door is not crooked. Make sure the door closes all the way and doesn't sit off-kilter, Hamm recommends.
