Each month, we'll showcase an artifact from The History Center as supplied by Jami Roskamp, curator and education coordinator for the Cedar Rapids-based organization.
This month's feature is a photograph taken during the Walther League Halloween Party on Oct. 31, 1910, at the home of Gertrude Rabus, 214 Second Ave. West.
Arthur J. Euker is pictured at right center with the wide bandanna scarf. The photographer was J.H. Richmond of Cedar Rapids.
From the picture it appears as if Halloween traditions of costumes and pumpkin carving have not changed much in the past 100 years.
The Walther League was a national Lutheran youth organization structured locally within the Cedar Rapids' German Lutheran Church. The youth group met to discuss religious topics, host social events and promote community and neighborhood fellowship.
