Work to protect our natural resources

To the editor:
I am calling on Iowa's representatives to use a common-sense approach in climate change and environmental issues.
In 2012, widespread drought affected about 80 percent of Iowa's agricultural land. Currently, drought is devastating agricultural land in California and threatening fires in Minnesota. Iowa has experienced both drought and severe flooding in recent years.
Around the world, drought has contributed to food price increases and instability in many countries. Coastal areas face rising sea levels and declining fisheries.
Climate change makes the dangers of floods and drought worse, as carbon pollution heats the planet and changes weather patterns.
Fortunately, Iowa has grown into a clean-energy leader in urban and agricultural areas.
New rules from the Environmental Protection Energy will help limit power plant pollution. Moving away from fossil fuels to renewable energy will protect our water supply and avoid dangers from fracking and oil spills. Iowa's representatives must fund more research and renewable energy, like wind and solar energy, and advanced ethanol and biodiesel.
Every Iowan can help through education and by speaking up for action. Let's protect our environment, our public health and our precious natural resources.
