Witness to accident saddened she was the only one to stop

On March 2, I witnessed an accident at the intersection of Highway 13 and Highway 100. A tow truck towing a semi-truck with a trailer ran a red light and hit a car. The car spun around 180 degrees in the middle of the intersection.

It was a scary accident to witness because the truck hit the car on the driver's side. I immediately pulled over to the side of the road to make sure the driver of the car was OK. The driver was an elderly man who was injured and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Luckily, the impact was on the back door and quarter panel of the car.

I am truly disheartened that there were many witnesses of the accident, but I was the only person who stopped to make sure the driver was OK. The deputy on the scene said it is unusual for witnesses to stop anymore. How sad.

Are we as a society really so busy on a Sunday that we can't stop to make sure our fellow residents aren't seriously injured? Or, have we become so callous that stopping to help others is no longer important?

I thought as Iowans we take care of each other, but I surely didn't see that on March 2.
