Will you be able to vote?

The proposed “SAVE America Act” will require you to show proof of citizenship when you vote. Unless you are currently using your passport as your voter ID, what you are currently using will not be sufficient. You would be required to show proof of citizenship in the form of a passport, certified birth certificate or naturalization certificate that matches your current name, whenever you vote. If you have ever changed your name, you may be able to use certified copies of the documents that made those changes (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order granting a name change etc.) The specifics are not very clear as it seems to be left to the states to decide what might be acceptable.
The same proof of citizenship documentation would be required to register to vote or update your registration. You would be required to provide it in person at your county auditor’s office.
All this based on the lie that noncitizens are voting in numbers that affect election results. It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote and it is extremely rare. In the 2024 election, the Iowa Secretary of State reports that 35 noncitizens voted in Iowa, or 0.002% of the 1.67 million Iowans that voted, and they were referred for prosecution.
There is no evidence of voter fraud that would justify this onerous legislation that places an undue burden on citizens exercising their constitutional right to vote. Contact Sens. Grassley and Ernst today and voice your opposition to this bill.
