Will leaders take blame for guns?

Regarding the March 18 article, “GOP senators: Allow school personnel to be armed”:
I do not understand the logic in this proposal. I am an inmate at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. This is my third incarceration in Iowa prisons. I worked in Fort Madison at CCU, which specializes in helping inmates with mental health issues as an inmate mentor.
Correctional officers report to work every day knowing that something could happen at any moment and their only means of self-protection is a can of pepper spray to accompany their training. For obvious reasons, these officers are not equipped with lethal means of self-defense that could be used against themselves or others.
If the issue is school shootings, why would our government even consider allowing these same lethal weapons into our school system and calling it a “safety measure”? Further, how will they justify the first time a student kills a teacher with his or her own gun? Will politicians take responsibility for such incidents or simply blame it on mental health?
