Why continue curbside yard waste collection in Marion?

The City of Marion has failed its duty to provide municipal service. With trash collection conversion to automated curbside pickup, the Council established a shocking goal that 70% of its residents would no longer continue pickup for yard waste.
Mission accomplished. Of 12,300 accounts that had curbside yard waste funded through the resident’s utility bill, 9,559 (78%) declined paying extra to continue the service. Those losing service, without cost reduction, will instead have to transport their yard waste to the City’s compost facility on their own. This will likely result in waste being stored in private far longer than intended, and possibly disposal where not intended.
Is it really cost effective to continue what constitutes a “pay-on-demand” service for only 2,741? Why bother?
