Why are some coming to Trump’s defense?

The minute Joe Biden took office, Donald Trump became a private citizen again. Then, we learned that Donald Trump, private citizen, was found to be keeping classified federal documents on his private property. For one thing, he declared them to be self-unclassified documents. They weren't, but he continued holding on to them. Now he's been indicted for having U.S. government property without legal permission, and yet some elected officials have come to his defense. What am I missing here?
