Where have all the snow fences gone?

About 50 years ago, snow fences were a common sight in winter along our roads. Over the years, they have all but disappeared. Why?
In my opinion, they were the best way to keep the snow from piling up on certain stretches of roadway.
I can remember years ago when snow fencing was in place, we didn't have a snow-on-the-road problem.
I realize that in this day and age, we have snow-removal equipment that costs big bucks to purchase and operate. It seems to me there are certain areas of roadway that have to be plowed over and over again to try to keep them clear.
I believe it would be advantageous to all if our governments started using snow fence again and eliminate one major expense But then the state and counties have plenty of our money to spend.
