What happened to Iowa nice?

Recently, my wife was exiting our neighborhood drugstore on her way to the car with her COVID mask still on. A middle aged stranger looked at her and said "You don't need to wear that in the parking lot, you dumb***." According to letter to the editor guidelines, I am supposed to offer a solutions. Should I go back 40 years and talk to his mother about how to bring up a decent human being?
