Like most Iowans, you probably have very little tolerance for politicians who use their positions to enrich themselves. So you’ve probably been disheartened, to say the least, at the unprecedented corruption on display in the current White House – shady crypto schemes, selling access to the president, putting a price on pardons (the list goes on).
Public corruption isn’t a partisan issue. Principled Iowans – Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike – detest it, and have historically condemned its corrosive effects. At a recent town hall, Congresswoman Ashley Hinson was given the opportunity to stand with those principled Iowans when she was asked why, in the face of such blatant presidential self-dealing, she has chosen to remain silent. But rather than calling out the corruption, Hinson shifted the focus away from the White House by saying that she, personally, was “leading by example.”
So what is the shining example Hinson is setting? It can be summed up as this: No matter how outrageous the corruption gets at the top, just keep quiet about it, ignore your oath of office, and hope that you’ll be rewarded for looking the other way. Disgusting! Let’s hope young people look elsewhere for their role models.
