We should not defend human rights abuses

Recently a resolution condemning hate speech passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. This had followed remarks by U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar that were said by some to be anti-Semitic. Listening to and reading her remarks in context casts doubt on that conclusion. It is not popular in our country to criticize Israel. Defense of Israel should be reason, not name-calling and careless accusations.

What is without dispute is the treatment the Palestinians are receiving from the government of Israel. Basic human rights to water, shelter, freedom of movement, a livelihood, and property ownership are being violated. International law continues to be broken. This is what should motivate our resolutions.

If we do not speak out against this, we are complicit. If we beat down those who speak out, we are also complicit. It is not anti-Semitic to criticize the actions of the state of Israel. We can remain a stanch ally of Israel and yet reject their human rights abuses.

There are many other ways to truly support the Jewish people and realize there is a rise in anti-Semitic incidences in our country and in others. Morally, we should stand up for the human rights of the Palestinians and the Jewish people.
