We need clean, healthy energy sources
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 24, 2012 1:14 pm
Industry-paid analysts tell us, the rate paying public, that we need to prepay for the only reliable energy available, nuclear. The fact that no business interest is willing to pay for such a costly risky venture goes unmentioned. The fact that regardless of the outcome, power or no power, for-profit business interests like MidAmerican stand to make millions off this distorted reality, is similarly hidden.
The costs, lives and environmental damage incurred to acquire limited, basic materials for nuclear power are ignored. The costs and risks of storing nuclear waste forever are forgotten. The incalculable costs of accidents at Chernobyl, Fukushima and elsewhere are minimized.
When are we going to wake up, acknowledge the unacceptable costs in money, lives and our environment if we swallow the fairy tales about nuclear power? When will we realize that we are being left behind as the rest of the world moves forward solving their energy needs with clean, healthy, sustainable and distributed energy sources? How much more money, time, resources have to be wasted before we realize it's time to prioritize our health, the health of our environment, and our children's future when making decisions about our energy sources?
Isn't it time to definitively say no to overpriced, dangerous and dirty sources of energy?
