We need a better transportation system

Why do we support a transportation system that's incredibly inefficient? Our state and country is overrun by passenger vehicles, when we could instead be supporting ways of transportation that are not only more energy and money-efficient, but more enjoyable for everyone overall.
I highly doubt that anyone enjoys being behind the wheel in a trafficked area, not being able to concentrate safely on anything other than the road. Public transportation gives passengers the opportunity to spend the time that was once spent driving focusing on their businesses, relationships, writing, or whatever they want. We're given endless opportunities as to how to spend our free time nowadays, thanks to technology.
The option should be given to us to bike or walk freely anywhere as well. Not only would the environment thank us, but the mental clarity and health benefits perceived from these activities are undeniable. These give us time to think and receive the world around us from a new, thoughtful, and paced perspective. Not to be forgotten, the gas and money saved from taking advantage of walking or biking would be astounding. Some people may say that these are time wasters, but the amount of time spent working to pay for gas money and vehicle purchases can be equivalent to the amount of time walking or biking.
