We can each act on climate change

I wonder what planet syndicated columnist Cal Thomas is living on? He continues to espouse the view that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by liberals. (Dec. 2, 'When will the climate change apocalypse come?”) Wake up! An overwhelming majority of the world's scientists believe climate change is real, it's caused primarily by human activities, and urgent action is needed to prevent catastrophic consequences.

What are the potential consequences if we take action now? Some sectors of our economy - primarily fossil fuel production - will suffer. But others - renewable energy and emerging technologies - will flourish. Our air, land and water will be cleaner. Public health will improve.

What are the potential consequences if we do nothing? More frequent extreme floods, droughts and storms will occur. Global food supplies will be disrupted, leading to mass starvation in many parts of the world.

Biodiversity will decline and many mammal, bird, insect and plant species will disappear, leading to the collapse of ecosystems. Global conflict and warfare over scarce resources will occur. This is not a world I like to envision for my children and grandchildren.

What can each of us do to help reverse climate change? Become informed on the topic. Let our elected officials know we support renewable energy. Reduce our use of fossil fuels. Reduce food waste. Reduce our use of disposable products. Look online for other ideas.

Even if our current political leaders refuse to take action, each of us can take actions that together will make a difference.
