I awoke Sunday morning still feeling energized and hopeful after attending the largest protest I had ever seen in Cedar Rapids on Saturday. Excited to see the coverage in my local newspaper, I opened The Gazette to find … virtually nothing! There was a second page article taken from the Associated Press documenting some of the largest protests around the country and a few photos of the protest in Mount Vernon, Iowa. While I applaud the inclusion of those photos, I find it appalling and emblematic of our media that there was no coverage of an event that was attended by thousands in our city. Was it deemed not important, too political, or was it just lazy reporting? I have always supported our local newspaper and have a strong belief in the importance of local journalism. I am having my doubts about how this paper is filling that role.
