War against al-Qaida no longer in Afghanistan
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 16, 2009 12:20 am
The Oct. 12 letter from James Schmitz said that President Obama must send more troops to Afghanistan to “make our country safer.” It wouldn't.
The usual gang of conservatives who favor sending more troops has been wrong about everything so far. They cheered when President Bush diverted our troops and resources from Afghanistan to Iraq, which allowed bin Laden and al-Qaida to escape and regroup in Pakistan.
The hawks insisted that Iraq was the central front in the war on terror, when it was Afghanistan. Now they insist Afghanistan is the central front, but it has migrated to Pakistan.
As Frank Rich wrote in the New York Times, “To appreciate this crowd's spotless record of failure, consider its noisiest standard-bearer, John McCain. He made every wrong judgment call that could be made after 9/11.”

It doesn't make sense to send more troops to a country al-Qaida has now left. Let's fight them smart this time, not waste troops and resources on another debacle.
