Vote no on LOST extension
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 19, 2012 11:00 pm
Voting “no” again on the extension of the local-option sales tax. I encourage others to do the same because I have never seen a full report of how earlier money was spent. I'm still angry that some were able to get a high assessment on their flooded property and received an even greater amount of money. How can a flooded house have a higher assessment than before the flood and also receive an additional 7 percent on the assessed value?
Since the east side and the town were already approved for flood protection and it was determined by the Army Corps of Engineers that the west side was not worth the protection, why should the City Council be given a blank check to extend beyond 2014, which is how long the tax has yet to go? Wait and see how the rest of the money is spent. The flood wall will be a long ways off and could not be necessary for 50 or more years. People should request accountability for the tax already collected.
Cedar Rapids is in need of funds for schools, roads and streets. A lot of money has been spent foolishly that could have been better used. On March 6, say “no” to a blank check.
