Victims of domestic violence deserve better
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 21, 2013 12:18 pm
Iowans who deal with domestic violence deserve better. They've been affected in multiple ways and they need some help. One third of teen women suffer from domestic or dating abuse. Every nine seconds in the U.S., a woman is assaulted or beaten. Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually.
But if the victims experience domestic violence in their home, where will they go to escape it? What if they don't live close to another family member or friend? HF 103, a bill proposed in the Iowa House of Representatives in January, would make sure that domestic violence victims have shelter away from their abusers and provide different programs to help the victims and the domestic abuser.
Ask your state representatives to vote for this bill during the next legislative session.
