Veterans not missing; they're being denied
Nov. 26, 2009 11:38 pm
L. Tammy Duckworth, the Department of Veterans Affairs' assistant secretary for public and intergovernmental affairs, was quoted in the Nov. 9 Gazette that we, as veterans, are hidden and unaware that we might be eligible for benefits. The truth is we are not hidden veterans, we are denied veterans.
After serving my country for 14 years in the Army and National Guard, I am told that I cannot qualify for veterans benefits. It is not my intention to be a bleeding heart but to make veterans, and the public as well, aware of what is going on out here.
I have applied several times for veterans medical eligibility. Each time I am denied. I was told by my VA representative that since I live in Benton County and our combined annual household income exceeds a certain amount, I have little chance to qualify for any benefits. Why is my annual income or where I live even a determining factor? Am I not a veteran?
I have talked with dozens of men my age who say they have not applied for benefits because they make too much money. Nobody cared how much money we had when we were drafted decades ago. Are we to be penalized for our success in life?
I believe that combat veterans who suffered loss of life or limb should come first, of course. However, I do not think it is fair to sweep the rest of us under the rug and deny us medical assistance just because Congress drew a line several years ago. I am sure thousands of us so-called hidden veterans would have applied before the deadline had we known that some day Congress would set a date and declare us all non-existent.
I do so love my country, and if called would be first in line to proudly serve again. At the same time, I am ashamed of our government when I realize that an illegal immigrant stands a better chance for medical assistance than the veterans who gave so much.
