Veteran thankful for Honor Flight, helpers

I served in the military during World War II. This made me eligible for the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., on April 26. The trip turned out to be one of the best days of my life, almost parallel to the day I was informed I had passed all the tests and could now be inducted into the cadet program of the U.S. Army Air Corps, now the U.S. Air Force.
Thank you to the members of the American Legion Post No. 298, along with many other Legion Posts' members and the committee that volunteered to organize this Honor Flight trip. Thank you to Hy-Vee for sponsoring the trip and my guardian, Kristine Johnson, and anyone else who helped.
It was a long day, but filled with one exciting event after another. We arrived back at the Cedar Rapids airport at midnight and were greeted by hundreds of Americans of all ages, men women and children. They formed two lines reaching from the plane to the front entrance of the terminal, shook our hands, hugged us and thanked us for our service to the country. I had to fight back tears during this loving welcome. It was the frosting on the cake for a great day in my life.
