Vander Plaats’ objective for Iowa judges
The Gazette Opinion Staff

There is a group, led by Bob Vander Plaats, that is trying to get us to reject Iowa Supreme Court Justice David Wiggins because they say freedom is at stake. That is ridiculous. Vander Plaats thinks that the Iowa Bar Association has a hidden agenda to elect activist judges that will bring down the moral fabric of our society. He says once gay people can marry, then the justices will go after all kinds of sacred issues.
Give me a break! These justices made the right decision to allow people the freedom to marry without discrimination. The solution, Vander Plaats says, is to reject these justices and let the governor select new justices instead of the State Judicial Nominating Commission. That way his group will only have to influence one person. I would rather have the State Judicial Nominating Commission nominate judges than have one person do it.
Vander Plaats' real mission is to get rid of any justices that voted yes in the Varnum decision, because he doesn't agree with them. Then, he wants to change the nominating system. Make sure you understand what you are voting for this November!
