United States is on a downward spiral

The mighty Roman Empire went down, and I fear the United States is following in its footsteps.
What is happening to us? Our politicians no longer represent the people, but the PACS who pay them the most. Violence breeds more violence. We no longer have conversations; we have arguments. What was once amicable discourse is now 'my way or the highway.”
Can we not find a way to discuss ideas with our neighbor without name calling? Can we not express our opinions, assuming they are just that - opinions and not facts? Until all of us resort to common sense, we will continue the downward spiral. We can choose to make things better in America, but we all must work together.
I have no answers, but what we are doing now is not working.
