Tyne goes above and beyond to help veterans

I was dismayed by Ken Lowen's Sept. 12 letter castigating Don Tyne, director of Linn County Veterans Affairs. The criticism is unfounded. Don has done more for Linn County veterans than any previous director. He works tirelessly, assisting veterans with various needs. When they need assistance beyond the scope of the VA, Don researches and directs needy veterans to other community resources.
Veterans receive various types of training to prepare them for serving their country. Some of these skills can prepare them for re-entering the job market. However, combat troops learn specific skills for combat. The physical, and sometimes mental, difficulties resulting from their combat experience make it more difficult for these veterans to re-enter the job market without additional service provision. This was the context in which Don made the comment that combat veterans are trained to kill.
I have worked with Don organizing the Five Seasons Stand Down for the past four years. Initially, the event was implemented by veterans to support and help the homeless of the community. It has consequently changed to include homeless veterans because many of the homeless are veterans. Approximately 85 homeless veterans and 80 homeless nonveterans were served by this year's stand down.
Funding for the stand down came through various streams including the VA, grants and private donations.
Lowen should become better informed.
