Iran has had a long-standing conflict with Israel. But this conflict arose after the original conflict in this area. In 1948 the United Nations proposed a Jewish state after the suffering of the Holocaust. However, since many Palestinians had to give up their traditional lands to make room for this new state, the matter of just where the borders should be was left unresolved. At the time, Gaza was under Egyptian rule, but since this separation, the Palestinians in that area were separated from the rest of the Palestinian areas.
Despite the Oslo Accords and other attempts, the matter of an Arab state of Palestine has not been accepted by Israel.
There are no innocents in this conflict but it has become ever more complex. However the U.S. support of Israel's right of self-defense has become seriously destabilizing, as all countries, including Israel, have been aggressively offensive.
Donald Trump's recent decision to send bunker bombs to Iran has sadly made this situation even more fraught. Regrettably, Trump's bully tactics were absolutely contraindicated. Everlasting war is not the answer.
