Traffic signs are inadequate
The Gazette Opinion Staff

How many get snared on a daily basis on Interstate 380 (through Cedar Rapids) because of inadequate posting and display of speed limit signs and the almighty “speed enforced by camera” sign? None of these signs do a good job of letting motorists know what the speed limit is (since it changes three times in a 5-mile stretch). One small sign on the right-hand side tries to gather motorists' attention to tell them that this section of road is electronically patrolled.
Motorists may not see that small sign on a busy commute because they're in the middle lane with semis, transportation vans and construction trucks blocking the view. The same can be said for the speed limit signs.
Three very busy lanes of traffic moving north and south, yet not an illuminated sign overhead or on the left-hand side of the road warning driver taxpayers that the speed limit is changing three times but is now being enforced by speed cameras.
Traffic cameras give no discretion to traffic and do not allow for incidences that involve large volumes of traffic, the conversion and distribution of that traffic through its many diverse areas of Cedar Rapids.
