Traffic cameras motivated by money
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Oct. 26, 2009 12:44 am
In 56 years, I have driven many thousands of miles with only two minor traffic violations, so I do not believe the cameras at intersections will affect me. I do believe they are a deterrent as red-light running seems common.
A Gazette story said cameras are expected to bring in $750,000 in fine revenue in the next year. The police chief and captain say it's about safety, not about money. Yeah, right. If the money is not important, then may I suggest it be given to flood victims or charity? The same is true about the $500 fee charged to impound a vehicle. It's all about extracting money under the pretense of teaching John Q. Public a lesson in safety.
