Traffic cameras: Lawmakers don’t get it
The Gazette Opinion Staff

In order to protect our citizens and guests along our highways, Cedar Rapids police need all the help they can get. Many law breakers would never be caught if it were not for the help of decent citizens and cameras. Yet our governor and some of our legislators don't seem to understand this. They object to our traffic cameras obviously to have a better chance to get by with their own violations, although they give all sorts of lame reasons for wanting a ban. I wonder whether they also object to cameras in banks and other places used for the same purposes. If not, why not?
Would they object to a policeman stationed at every dangerous spot? What is the difference between the eyes of a law enforcement officer and the eyes of a camera? Could these objectors make an argument that this is different without sounding like fools?
A disheartened preacher once despondently confided to me that his congregation left their brains at the front door of his church. Does this malady also apply to politicians as well?
