To the editor:
The S-curve on Interstate 380 as it traverses downtown Cedar Rapids has engendered much debate, past as well as present. I believe that the paramount question answered by the installed speed cameras is first and foremost that it is a public safety measure. Speed kills!
Our reflexes to untoward events is lessened dramatically the faster we are traveling and worsens in inclement weather by several factors. Unfortunately, the person traveling greater than the stated limit endangers not only him/herself but everyone else as well. Could you live with the knowledge that your excessive speed was the cause of an accident, much less a fatality, either yours or someone else's? The evidence to be is irrefutable - that lives have been saved since the installation of the cameras.
I applaud the City of Cedar Rapids in its desire to continue to provide a safer passage through our wonderful home. It has also allowed our police force to spend time and resources serving our population in more meaningful and worthwhile pursuits.
