Tombstone vandalism shocking to visitor
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I was asked by a friend to drive him to Louisa County in search of cemeteries to pursue his family history. We visited five cemeteries that day; three of them out in the middle of nowhere.
To my astonishment, many of the gravesites were still intact (many dating back to the early 1800s), but the one constant reminder of how ridiculous people are is that many of these gravesites have been vandalized. Tombstones and markers, many of which are hundreds of years old, have been knocked down and broken. Why do this? What's the “thrill” of destroying a gravestone?
