To honor veterans, start by not disparaging the military

Nov. 11 is a day set aside to honor America’s veterans who, beginning with the Revolutionary War and winning our independence from England, through the many wars and conflicts during more than two centuries as a nation, have kept us safe and helped preserve democracies around the world.
When we consider the turmoil throughout the world, the lack of freedom in many nations, the fear of attack and oppression endured by many, one day a year hardly seems adequate to thank those who have worn the uniform of our military, sacrificed and risked their lives for all of us.
That is why it saddens me to see some people who have achieved positions of great power disparage the military and its leaders despite never having worn the uniform. Especially disturbing are the comments of a former president and the damage done by a U.S. senator who is holding up over 300 military promotions and appointments hurting the readiness of our military. GOP Sen. Joni Ernst has this right calling out her fellow Republican. Where is Sen. Chuck Grassley?
The greatest threat facing America today comes from within as extreme political and cultural/religious wars build distrust and division in our institutions and our military. When you stand for our veterans on their day, Nov. 11, think about your role in keeping our country free and safe. Thank you, veterans, from a proud, yet very concerned veteran.
