Time to value community college instructors
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Explain to me why our state university presidents need a pay increase and why the Board of Regents agrees. I try not to contrast my salary (part-time community college instructor) to a university president's salary, but then again, why not make the point that a community college instructor of writing and literature, according to salary compensation, is valued far, far less than a university president is valued. And let's have that discussion. Values are arbitrary, yes? I tell my students that “meaning” doesn't drop out of the sky - we decide what
things mean and then we go about communicating those meanings to others. I am perplexed or maybe just worn out from thinking about it.
People are struggling to budget, to raise children, to learn and to make our world a better place. Will increasing salaries of university presidents make our world a better place? And what would happen if senators and representatives were paid the same salary as a community college instructor?
