Time to move on from gay marriage debate
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Feb. 15, 2011 3:55 pm
The recent debate in the Iowa Legislature over same-sex marriage is damaging Iowa's economy and reputation. By stubbornly rehashing a ruling that most Iowans say has had no impact on their lives, legislators are continuing to pit neighbors against each other and weaken the state. Iowans have never amended the state constitution to exclude a certain group of people, and I doubt they're about to change that trend.
Not only are our legislators dividing the state, they may very well be scaring off potential employers, something desperately needed in these economic times. Business leaders prefer to invest in communities with a diverse work force and that are open and inviting to all. Going backward on civil rights would send the wrong message to employers and may prevent talented employees from moving to Iowa.
Tell your legislators: it's time to move on.
