Tie student loans to majors, jobs that pay
The Gazette Opinion Staff

There are approximately $1 trillion of outstanding student loans. These are unsecured loans for which there is no bankruptcy protection. The adage “we wear the chains we forge in life” applies to many people with these loans, as many used those loans to earn college degrees in majors that are not very lucrative.
Student loans do not exist as means of the government to bring in revenue. They exist as a service to encourage a more educated public. When taking a student loan people go to college to get a job, not for esoteric reasons of enlightenment and education. Therefore, student loans should be tied to the major pursued and if the student changes from a lucrative major to an unlucrative major the loan should be revoked. People should not be getting student loans for degrees with poor placement.
