Though not ideal for some, Gazette print reduction offers one benefit

The Gazette offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.
I have been a loyal subscriber to “The Gazette” for 60 years. For much of that time, I received the print edition because there was no alternative. In recent years, I transitioned to the electronic version, partly to help the environment by reducing the paper waste that inevitably accompanies printed newspapers.
The Gazette recently made the difficult decision to reduce the number of printed editions per week, largely for financial reasons. I recognize that this is a tough adjustment for many readers who have long relied on the printed version. For those who struggle with this transition, I sincerely hope resources like libraries or local support groups can assist them in accessing the electronic version.
I also try to view things from a positive perspective. An estimated 58 million trees are still cut down each year in the U.S. alone to produce newspapers. Knowing this, I find some comfort in my own decision to go digital, as well as the broader environmental benefit of reducing reliance on print.
My thoughts may not bring consolation to everyone, especially those who cherish the tradition of reading a physical newspaper. However, I firmly believe that supporting The Gazette in any format is crucial for our community. A strong local newspaper is essential to keeping us informed, connected, and engaged. I hope that even if print editions are someday eliminated entirely, The Gazette will continue to provide the same high-quality local reporting that has made our community a great place to live.
