The harsh reality is, justice isn’t blind

The Gazette editorial of Jan. 21, “Chief justice a dedicated specialist,” was a bit too idealistic.
Since the executive branch appoints upper court judges and the legislative branch funds the judiciary, “distinct” rather than “independent” might be a better word to describe our three branches of government. They look over each other's shoulders lest any one person or branch become too powerful. The Arizona shooter was said to distrust government but so did our Founding Fathers.
To suggest that a chief justice of a supreme court or a decision so rendered is apolitical is a reach. You folks exceeded the thought of the person who wrote about courts for World Book Encyclopedia. He says decisions dealing with “broad public issues ... serve as a powerful means of social and political change.”
Lady Justice may be blindfolded but neither she nor it are blind.
