The DNR should expand its mission
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jan. 11, 2012 9:17 am
Thank you for an informative article concerning the Department of Natural Resources' practice of leasing public land for row cropping (“DNR as landlord,” Jan. 2).
With more than
two-thirds of Iowa's
36 million acres already covered in just two species, corn and beans, and with 93 percent given to agricultural usage, 3 percent in cities and roads and less than
1 percent left with any biological integrity, the DNR's mission should not allow the planting of a highly erosive, annual, chemically dependent monoculture.
